Document Summary

Puberty begins: puberty refers to the various changes that transform a child"s body into an adult one. In adolescence, these changes often result in sleep deprivation, partly because teenagers are often wide awake at night: puberty normally begins anytime from about age 8 to about 14, most often between ages 10 and 13. Generally (depending on culture, community, and cohort), early-maturing girls and late-maturing boys have a particularly difficult time. Nutrition: to sustain body growth, many adolescents consume large quantities of food, although they do not always make healthy choices. Many adolescents eat too much of the wrong foods or too little food overall. The transformations of puberty: the growth spurt is an acceleration of growth in every part of the body. Peak weight usually precedes peak height, which is then followed by peak muscle growth. The lungs and the heart also increase in size and capacity: male-female differences become apparent at puberty.
