If you observe patterns long enough, you will understand the culture in much greater depth (takes several months or years) Being able to understand what is normal from what is abnormal. Need to earn the trust of the people (gate keepers are people in a position of authority that can deny the right to study their people) ~10,000 years ago, there was nothing but bands. Writing about a group at a contemporary time rather than basing work purely off of history while change is occurring. There are both pros and cons to developing into a more advanced society as well as in band situations. Have a low population density (people/square mile) [need to be able to cover large amounts of land in order to survive] Subsistence system: how communities of people survive; activities they rely on.
