BIOL 1119 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Net Force, Oncotic Pressure, Extracellular Fluid
Document Summary
Blood in aorta falls back towards heart filling cusps of closed aortic valve (2) Angina pectoris: partial obstruction of coronary blood flow can cause chest pain, causes reversible ischemia (temporary lack of blood flow to cardiac muscle) short term. Myocardial infraction (heart attack): long term obstruction of coronary circulation causes death of cardiac cells(myocardium) in affect area. Long term blockage often caused by fat deposit or blood clot lead to no blood flow to that area. Most common circulatory route: heart arteries arterioles capillaries venules veins heart. Portal system: blood flows through two consecutive capillary networks before returning to heart. Ex: hypothalamus to anterior pituitary (carrying control hormones to tropes), in kidneys, between intestines and liver. Arteriovenous anastomosis (shunt): blood flows from artery into vein. Shunts are located in extremities (fingers, palms, toes, ears) By allowing warm blood to bypass surface, shunts reduce heat loss during cold blood trying to protect warmer blood, farther from skin, preserve core body temp.
