Chapter 5 - opioids: opium, heroin, and opioid pain medications. Longer history than cocaine, but research wasn"t really done until late in the 1800s. Narcotics originally meant any drug that would alter psychological state. Ability to produce sleep stimulants then fell out of category of narcotics. Seed pod produces a liquid that helps nurture the plant. People make slits in pod and allow milky substance to ooze out, oxidizes and dries in the sun, creating a thicker structure, harvested for opium. Derivative compounds created by making specific changes in morphine. Derivative compounds created by changing chemical composition of codeine or thebaine. Oxymorphone acts similarly in body as morphine but has long lasting effect. Opana er released at steady rate over time. Oxycodone percodan, percocet meant to be less addictive.
