Begin with assessment information and diagnostic decisions. Consider what research shows to be the most effective treatment(s)= evidence based practice for the particular diagnosis. Other factors: clinician"s theoretical orientation, client"s preferences, needs, available resources (including insurance) May vary considerably depending on the client and the nature of the client"s disorder(s) Must be measurable- how to determine if a goal is met i. e. how to measure whether you are feeling better . Goals range from immediate to short-term to long-term. Lessen risk of client self-harm/harm to others. Lessen current level of intense distress: hospitalization for suicidal client, referral to psychiatrist, starting medication, clinician-determined for safety reasons. Resolve client needs that are signi cant, yet not urgent. Alleviate symptoms, enhance quality of life- focus on problematic behaviors, ways of thinking, dealing with emotional distress.
