Concentrates wholly on behaviors and environmental factors. Believe all behavior is learned classically or operantly. Behaviors are learned by watching others and imitating their behaviors. Behavioral theorists suggest that we can learn both normal and maladaptive behaviors and responses. Behaviors are acquired if they are reinforced in some way: more apt to repeat rewarded behaviors and less apt to repeat those with undesirable consequences. Maladaptive behavior must have been reinforced by others or because of the positive consequences. Date: 1/25/16: neutral >ur, cs >cr, meat >salivate/meat & tone >salivate/tone >salivate. A stimulus similar to the conditioned stimulus will produce the same response. Example: baby albert & moms experiment that led to generalization of all white and furry objects. Aim to identify behaviors that are causing problems and help client learn more adaptive behaviors to replace them: therapist is more of a teacher than a healer. Behavioral technique: operant conditioning: contingency management.
