Purpose is to achieve a thorough understanding of the phenomena under study. Description: observing a phenomenon and describing it accurately so that other people can see it through your eyes. In behavior analysis we call this an operational definition: may lead to descriptive studies; ask all students how many slides they thought were shown in class. The presence of one is correlated with another event with some probability of occurrence. Correlations can be used to predict relative probabilities. Not typically used in the science of behavior analysis.
