Two major schools of thought throughout history and modern practices: biological/chemical therapies drug treatment and shock treatment, talk therapy and behavioral therapy, can be combined for joint effectiveness for many disorders. Going beyond treating disorders, to encouraging mental health and thriving. Early approaches: ancestral man: cut holes in the skull to release evil spirits if you were lucky people could survive trepanning. Seems primitive but: lobotomy, egas moniz (1930s-70s): nobel prize winner for pioneering the frontal lobotomy. Frontal lobes are severed using an icepick-like instrument inserted through the eye sockets. Successfully used in: fewer side effects than ect and long term benefits. Parkinson"s but also now experimental treatment for severe ocd. Dbs of caudate appears successful for 2/3 of severe ocd patients for whom other therapies have failed. Being tested for depression as well (nucleus accumbens)
