Biological/chemical therapies- treatment of disordered brain ; dug treatment, shock treatment, brain stimulation, etc. Ancestral man: cut holes in the skull to release evil spirits. Electroconvulsive therapy- ect works very quickly, but the mechanism is still unclear, some patients may experience temporary memory loss of recent experiences, mostly recovered over time. Therapies: tms can be used to temporarily knock out the function of brain areas and allow for causal inferences in research. Successfully used in parkinson"s, but also now experimental treatment for severe ocd. Talf therapy and behavioral therapy- treatment of disordered mind - several varieties used for different disorders. Pharmacological approaches: multiple classes of drugs that alter neurochemistry. Antipsychotics for schizophrenia: dopamine antagonists- effective, but side effects can include motor tics, pseudo parkinson"s, lethargy. Antidepressants: often serotonin reuptake inhibitors (ssris) take weeks to take effect, side effects include weight gain, loss of sex drive.
