PSYCH 110 Lecture Notes - Lecture 4: Parasympathetic Nervous System, Peripheral Nervous System, Autonomic Nervous System
Document Summary
Vagus nerve primary interface of parasympathetic nervous system. Connects brain to lungs, heart, and digestive tract. Interneurons: communicate with other neurons: all share common features of communication. Neuronal transmission/ communication: presynaptic- sending neuron, postsynaptic- receiving neuron, synaptic connection, voltage changes at the cell bodies direct neural communication. Other chemical effects at the synapse: at the synapse, drugs/ other chemicals may impact the process and effect psychological or physical states, agonists: mimic action of transmitter by fitting in same receptors. Black widow venom and ach- muscle spasms and cramps: antagonists: block action of transmitter by binding to receptor without activating it. Botox and ach- clocks signals to muscle: neuromodulators: effect release or reuptake of another neurotransmitter. Prozac- block the reuptake of serotonin after it has been released into the synapse, thus prolonging its effect because more will ultimately find its way to receptors.
