Document Summary

Chromosomes are made of dna, genes are made of sequences of dna. Alfred hershey and martha chase studied in genetic material was in protein or dna by adding radioactive sulfur to each in different test tubes of bacteria and see which infected the bacteria. Came up with the physical model of dna. Studied how dna was replicated and concluded it is semi-conservatively by measuring dna"s density after adding heavy (15) nitrogen. Nucleotides - phosphate group + base + (deoxy)ribose 5 carbon sugar. 2 strands w/ sugar-phosphate backbones; anti-parallel strands; bases in pairs a -> t and g -> c pair together; a/g are pyrines, larger; c/t are pyrimidines, smaller. Rna primer synthesized by primase, at 5" to start synthesis of dna by dna polymerase. 1st rxn: split pi off gtp, very exergonic. 2nd rxn: phosphodiester bond is formed from energy from first rxn, very endergonic. Dna acts as a pattern for synthesis by following bases.
