APSY-UE 20 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Brainstem, Neural Pathway, Subjective Constancy
Document Summary
Perceptual constancy: we perceive objects as unchanging even as our retinal images change. At times, however, perceptions are based on inaccurate assumptions, and visual illusions can result. Muller-lyer illusion: two lines, asked which one is longer, westerners are more susceptible to think that they are different lengths (they are the same) shows that perception is subjective based on factors like culture & society. Dramatic shift in the 1960s that allowed us to understand the different states of consciousness, not only as it naturally occurred, but also how it was altered. Consciousness: our awareness of ourselves and our environments. Allows us to assemble information from a variety of sources as we reflect on the past and plan for the future. Critical for focusing our attention when we learn a complex concept or behavior. Perceptual window is open to some extent. Some wake up to their baby but not through loud crashes.
