Lecture 4: translation: the number 1" on the rna is the rst coding nucleotide. The start codon is not at the rst base of the rna. The number scheme skips introns: for many genes, there"s not a single promoter. There might be multiple primary transcripts from the same gene as different promoters are used. Rnas may not have the same termination sites as some genes have multiple termination sites, multiple poly(a) cleavage sites. Splicing can be alternative; in different cells, different introns may or may not be spliced out: generation of multiple mrnas by alternative. Introns tend to be much larger than exons, so the diagram is not to scale. The transcripts of the gene in the broblast cells, and the hepatocyte cells are different. The broblast cells have mrna that have the two green exons. The hepatocyte cells have mrna that don"t have the green exons.
