Humans can only live together in large numbers and for any length of time if they are subject to a government strong enough to control their destructive tendencies. Felicity: condition when we are in a state where pleasure predominates. Reason: calculated faculty by which we are enabled most effectively to achieve felicity and avoid the reverse. Right of nature: inherent right to self-preservation. Law of nature: precept or rule found out by reason that prevents one from doing what could lead to one"s death or could prevent one from preserving her own life. The state of nature: a world in which there is no government resulting in a state of chaos in which life would be solitary, poor, nasty, brutish and short .
