Document Summary

Previous problems: invaders breaking through borders, too much money in army more taxes people wouldn"t pay army weakened, farmers lost land and crowded cities, private businesses couldn"t survive and government took over, roman virtues forgotten. Problems were causes by a caos of 37 rulers in 50 years after marcus aurelius dies. These problems also occurred because the empire was too big. Diocletion wasn"t rich and he came to power which inspired plebians. Came to power by defeating carinus in battle. Constantine then came to power through battle as well and he split the emporer in two. Constantine established a new roman capital that became like a christian capital- endorced christianity. Diocletion didn"t react well to christianity and killed many people. Both tried to help the economy by trying to fix inflatin and raise value of the coin. Diocletion ruled east side and constantine ruled west. Short term this was a great solution but long term the wastern half fell.
