Semiotics - how meanings are created and denoted and focuses on the sign. Sign is the smallest unit of meaning, and every sign is composed of two parts: Signi er (material component sign) and signi ed (conceptual component of meaning itself) Every sign has a referent which is the concrete thing it is referring to. Relationship between signi er and signi ed is conventional. Communication only exists through signs and sign systems. Iconic ~ posses some of the properties of the thing being represented (resemblance) Photograph, painting (brand tells what the brand is) Indexical ~ caused > traces > sign carries traces of signi ed. Sign lived upon the existence of its signi ed (brand refers to use) Smoke ( re), photograph (what was infant of camera) Symbolic ~ another neither indexical or iconic yet still culturally understood. Denotation ~ literal meaning of a sign. Takes the rst sign and gives a second meaning to it.
