Spouse/partner often serves as primary attachment after marriage. Primary attachment will change across your lifespan. Young child-usually mother, father plays this role. Older-usually spouses, or single adults would be friends. Not a communication based theory (psych theory) Attachment styles=bonds that we form with others as a result of parenting practices. These bonds shape our identity and how to approach relationships. Argues that the bond with the primary parents (mother) from birth is our primary attachment that is relatively stable across our lifespan. We can predict of future behavior in relationships based off past behavior in relationships. Primary attachment is the current attachment at the time being. Child= positive self worth, affectionate, able to handle ups and downs. Able to verbalize liking and loving towards another person and match up with behaviors that match. Able to be more affectionate than others. Fundamentally able to get through life"s ups and down.
