Midterm exam is on march 8th (6am to 9pm) Element: substance composed of a single type of atom. Atom: the smallest particle of an element that retains the properties of the element. You drink electrolytes when you"re working out because you lose water and cations and anions (k+ and na+) Silicon and oxygen make up 75% of the earth"s crust. Oxygen is the only anion among the 8 (of abundance) that make up the earth"s crust. It"s able to contain and release a lot of energy. It"s a metal, but it oats on water (very light) Lithium oxidizes quickly in the air and even faster in water (breaking glass), because it gives up electrons easily to oxygen. Oxygen in the air becomes an anion as lithium becomes a cation. Lithium burns up when its exposed to air and there"s a chemical reaction when it"s exposed to water.
