Crater lake history: 12,000 years ago some native americans living in the area may have witnessed the volcanic eruption that formed crater lake. Wesley hillman, henry klippel, and isaac skeeters were the first non-natives to see crater lake. He wrote articles, letters, petitions, and lobbied congress and several presidents: 1886 the u. s. geological survey ran a geologic study of the lake, 1902 - established as a national park. Thanks to the efforts of steel and his connections to president theodore roosevelt, crater lake became our sixth. National park: 1913 steel became the park"s second superintendent, and later the park"s commissioner.
