Islands settled by polynesians from south pacific islands. 1778 captain james cook discovered the islands. Sandwich islands in honor of the earl of sandwich. 1791 - 1810 king kamehameha united all warring factions on the islands to form one royal kingdom. 1819 liholiho (kamehameha"s son) abolished the ancient system of kapu or the laws and custom that upheld the power of the priests and nobles. 1820 the first protestant missionaries arrived at the hawaiian islands. 1840-1841 geologist james dwight dana conducted a scientific survey of the volcanoes directed by the u. s. navy. 1893 the hawaiian kingdom was overthrown in a peaceful coup by american colonists. 1898 hawaii became a territory of the united states. 1911 the hawaii volcano observatory was organized on kilauea. 1941 on december 7, the empire of japan attacked pearl harbor. Located on the island of hawaii (the big island); the largest of the eight main hawaiian. The volcanoes on the other islands are dormant.
