Objective of 18th century england: create new revenue sources. Restrict contact between colonies and all other empires. Mercantilism-find natural resources, extract them, and it all goes to the support of the mother colony. 1754: 26 english colonies newfoundland to the caribbean and west indies. Population-small scattered, mostly slave labor irish and african white population composed of transients, gentry, or middling. Population: 313,177 black, 42,686 white (80% male no stability, no families) 2% upper class, 10% skilled labor, 78% unskilled. This shows what happens when everyone is centered around a sole commodity. Barbados is the most profitable and important colony to great britain. Arise out of original charters but only have as much authority as crown allows. Created laws based on the needs and representation of the landed minority. *before the revolution, massachusetts bay and other colonies were not important to gb. Charters awarded to joint stalk companies held trade monopolies: proprietary colony: Tended to created inclusive and more tolerant culture.
