Document Summary

Why study the brain, the brain is the most complex thing the universe ever produced. Ever: the brain is where psychology (and everything) happens, emotions and feelings, knowledge and understanding. Sometimes referred to as gray matter: receive signals from other neurons, but it isn"t even that simple; there are multiple types of dendritic spines (tin, mushroom, stubby, axon, carries signals toward other neurons. Long extension that carries signals away from the cell body to other neurons. Myelin sheath: axons are coated in a substance called myelin, a fatty substance protects the axon and facilitates movement of electrical signals down the axon. Sometimes to referred to as white matter: degradation of myelin = multiple sclerosis. Synapses: place where dendrites and axons meet, men/women, white/gray matter. Inside of a neuron is filled with negatively charged particles (ions) and some positively charged ions.
