SOCIOL 2210 Lecture Notes - Lecture 7: Association Football Culture, Dwight Hicks, Tiger Woods
Lecture 7- 2/3
Should we make the game less violent?
• You play through the injuries, don't like to tell people they are hurt, just want to get through it
themselves
• The trainers that are hired might not have the players best interests of the players
• Must learn how to properly tackle to lessen the extent of injuries
Morgan Reed about Ferguson:
• Middle violent area there are more problems- where michael brown from- the suburban areas
• Brown didn't think he was going to end up getting shot, he didn't grow up to know how to deal
with cops and that the potential of getting shot is real
• In the most violent areas, police are there more and civilians know how to act around them to
keep themselves safe
• Strategy: Officers should take a second to reevaluate before proceeding so that they don't shoot
anymore- should only happen when there is time not always before an escalation happens
• Police culture: cops never back down, they should never retreat, they always win, should
strategic retreat
What do cops need to know about interacting with young black men?
• Should know they are scared, potential victim of racial profiling
• If cops take a second to ask, they might be able to calm them down and situation may end
completely different
• why do people walk down the middle of street instead of sidewalk? They just do
There is a huge tension between African Americans and white cops- Brown's killing is the spark that led
to the fire that only intensified between these two groups
