Cleft palate only (without cleft lip) is one of the few communication disorders more common in girls than boys: macroglossia. Causes articulation problems: childhood apraxia of speech (nerves not sending signals correctly) 3 types: idiopathic: unknown cause, syndromic: associated with genetic abnormalities that affect a number of developmental outcomes, neurogenic: acquired, for example due to intrauterine stroke. Speech sound disorders can occur across the lifespan: childhood disorders can be: Incomplete or faulty learning of the sound system.
