Structural disorders that cause articulation errors: cleft palate and lip. Clefting occurs between the 5th and 12th week of pregnancy. Cleft lip & palate more common than cleft palate only. Cleft palate only (without cleft lip) is one of the few communication disorders more common in girls than boys: macroglossia. Tongue has a hard time fitting in the mouth and hard to articulate clearly. Difficult for the tongue to reach the articulation spots: tight lingual frenulum. More frequently a cause of difficulties in early feeding than speech production. A relative common cause cerebral palsy. Causes articulation problems: childhood apraxia of speech (nerves not sending signals correctly) 3 types: idiopathic: unknown cause, syndromic: associated with genetic abnormalities that affect a number of developmental outcomes, neurogenic: acquired, for example due to intrauterine stroke. Speech sound disorders can occur across the lifespan: childhood disorders can be: Incomplete or faulty learning of the sound system.
