MDIA 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 24: Florence Turner, Kinetoscope, The Bangville Police
Document Summary
To truly laugh, you must be able to take your pain, and play with it. Edison"s black maria studio in west orange, new jersey (1893) Had rotating base to take advantage of daylight. You could see edison"s short films for a small sum of money. Kinetoscopes were short-lived: they disappeared around 1900, giving way to projected films. Similar idea to the lumiere brothers: projecting the images. Shown in vaudeville performances, traveling shows, penny arcades. By 1900 the triteness and poor quality of early films dimmed the novelty and they were used as chasers in vaudeville shows. First dedicated movie theaters for projected motion pictures. Very low cost for all day access to films. Popular in cities and areas of squalor. Put the viewer out of their everyday experience. Educators, politicians, and clerics thought movies were immoral because they were made for pure entertainment purposes rather than education or art.
