PSY 1010 Lecture Notes - Lecture 9: Linguistic Determinism, In-Group Favoritism, Loss Aversion
Document Summary
Natural concepts: not a fixed set of rules. Ex. space shuttles and hot air balloons, can be natural concepts of an aircraft. Ex. college students are from the ages of 18 - 24 but there are some that are 49 years old. Schemas: generalization about categories of objects, places, events and people. Ex. schema of a track race and people are at the line and then they run to the other line. Ex. resaurant; look at the menu, sit down, order, get food, pay and give a tip. Mental models: representations of situations or objects that guide our interactions with them. Heuristic: simpler strategy that is speedier than an algorithm, but are also more error prone. When in fact it is greater than both: representativeness, because it is prototypical, it belongs on a group, judging that something belongs to a certain group because of its similarities to some group memory.
