Document Summary

All organisms recycle their components back to the biosphere. A reservoir is the part of the biosphere that contains significant amounts of an element: acts as both a source for that element for living organisms and as a sing to which it returns. Global reservoirs of carbon include: atmosphere. Much smaller than other sources: cyles most rapidly. Acts as a source of co2 for photosynthesis and lithotrophy, and as a sink for co2 produced by heterotrophy: ocean. The ocean absorbs a good part of the extra co2 in the atmosphere: land. In theory, carbonate rock is the largest reservoir. The hydrologic (water) cycle is the cyclic exchange of water between the atmosphere and biosphere: water precipitates as rain falls to earth, it is returned by evaporation to the air. Water passing through the ground picks up nutrients. Microbial oxygen consumption creates a biochemical oxygen demand (bod) High bod can cause a massive die-off of fish and other aquatic animals.
