For men increase from 29% to 47% For women increase from 14% to about 27% Numeracy is the ability to do basic math. One reason is religious: protestant church emphasizes bible readings, the catholic church was emphasizing education. A lot of competition between the countries. Economic reasons also: more commercial economics, need basic literacy to get by in commercial economy. More books are produced because more people can read. Technological advances will lower the cost of publishing which lowers the cost to buy: lower classes can now afford. Libraries start to appear: reading groups also. Women are consumers and producers as they gain literacy. People start to write letters to each other. Journalism started when nobles wanted to slam another noble so they hired someone to write a journal: expands and ends up in newspapers.
