Midterm: test is handed out exactly on time, about an hour-long test, 35-40 questions, covers chapters 1-5. Listening is probably the least-examined part of the communication process, which kind of reflects the old model of communication where messages were only sent one way. Hearing: sound waves strike eardrums and cause vibrations to be transmitted to the brain. Listening: brain reconstructs electrochemical impulses into representation of original sounds and gives them meaning. Language of listening: key terms: attending act of paying attention to a signal, understanding the process of making sense of a message, responding giving observable feedback to the speaker. Alonso 2: remembering we typically only remember 20% of an hour long speech. Residual message small fraction of what we hear that actually gets through to us. Mindful listening requires effort: mindless listening is passive. Faulty listening behaviour stems from overstimulation; we cannot critically listen to every message we receive. Sometimes we also grow disillusioned with the messenger.
