Wanted to become immortal through his books. War is the continuation of politics by other means - clausewitz. Introducing moderation into the theory of war results in obserdity . Power is to make others comply to will. For clausewitz, war is nothing but a duel. Triangle of war: military, people, and government: if one doesn"t live up to ful llment then war will be lose, example: during vietnam war, the people did not support the war. You push through and try to overcome all the obstacles for victory. Created the just war and unjust war theory. 3 stages of warfare: aus ad bellum: justice at war: before going to war what is the just thing to do. 1) defense - when a nation gets attacked. 2) pre-emption - if there are other countries slowly encroaching upon a nation. There are different versions of how to depict what pre-emption means. Israel fought back against arab nations in the 1980"s.
