PSY 111 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Standardized Test
Document Summary
In support of hypothesis, experiments revealed that black college students performed worse, in comparison to prior test scores, on standardized test questions. Task was described to them as being diagnostic of verbal ability. In contrast, performance wasn"t influenced when same questions were described as an exercise in problem solving. In another study, researchers found that when black students were asked to indicate race before they took a math test, again activating the stereotype, they performed more poorly than they had on prior exams. White students were not affected by indicating their race: stereotype threat: performance decrements that are caused by knowledge of cultural stereotypes, lifespan development: Development: physiological, behavioral, cognitive, & social emotional changes that occur throughout human life: guided by both genetic predispositions (nature) and environmental influences (nurture), age periods of development: Period between infancy & onset of puberty. Period between onset of puberty &beginning of adulthood.
