Freud provided a view of how personality develops through series of 5 psychosexual stages: during psychosexual stages children encounter conflicts between demands of society & own sexual urge, sexuality is more about experiencing pleasure, less about lust. Sequence proposed is noteworthy b/c it explains how experiences & difficulties during a particular childhood stage may predict specific characteristics in adult personality. Theory is also unique in associating each stage w/ a major biological function: freud assumed to be focus of pleasure in a given period, stages, oral, anal, phallic, latency, genital, oral stage: Baby"s mouth is focal point of pleasure. Children suck, eat, mouth, & bite anything they can put into their mouths: to freud, this behavior suggested that the mouth is the primary site of a kind of sexual pleasure, weaning: drawing breast/bottle.
