The boundaries of the science of psychology are constantly growing. Adaptation: behavioral genetics: focuses on biological mechanisms that enable inherited behavior to unfold, genes, chromosomes, clinical neuropsychology: unites areas of neuroscience & clinical psychology, focuses on origin of psychological disorders in biological factors, challenges of studying psychology: John locke: 17th century british philosopher, believed children were born w/ minds like (cid:498)blank slates(cid:499), their experiences determined what kind of adults they would become. Ren descartes: 17th century french philosopher, argued some knowledge was inborn in humans, philosopher plato agreed w/ this. Introspection: procedure used to study structure of the mind in which subjects are asked to describe in detail what they are experiencing when they are exposed to a stimulus. Used to determine how basic sensory processes shape our understanding of the world. Wundt & other structuralists came up w/ it: over time, psychologists challenged wundt"s approach.
