Racial Domination:
Arrangement of racial life in such a way that its ordinary, everyday workings
serve to benefit certain racial groups (in our society, predominantly whites)
at the expense of others (in our society, predominantly nonwhites).
o Dominants of a racial order: occupy a place in it such that regular
operation of racial order works in their favor.
o Dominated of a racial order: occupy a position in it such that its regular
operation works against them.
Racial domination is a matter of:
o How institutions ordinarily operate.
o How interpersonal exchanges (within & across racial divides) typically
unfold.
o How individuals (whites & nonwhites) unthinkingly come to see
themselves & their place in racial order.
There are 2 specific manifestations of racial domination:
1. Institutional Racism:
o Systematic white domination of POC, embedded & operating in
corporations, universities, legal systems, political bodies, cultural life,
& other social collectives.
o Has a type of power that encompasses:
Symbolic: classify one group of people as normal & other groups
of people as abnormal.
Political: withhold basic rights from POC & marshal full power of
the state to enforce segregation & inequality.
Social: deny POC full inclusion/membership in associational life
Economic: privileges whites in terms of job placement,
advancement, wealth & property accumulation.
o Withholds from POC opportunities, privileges, & rights that many
whites enjoy.
