Document Summary

Mutation is the permanent change of the nucleotide sequence of the genome of an organism, virus, or extra-chromosomal dna or other genetic elements. Mutations may occur spontaneously in germ-line or somatic cells; they can also be induced. Mutant is an organism or a new genetic character arising from an instance of mutation. Mutations is the ultimate source of genetic variation. They provide the raw material for evolution. Without mutations all genes would exist in only one form. Populations of organisms would not be able to evolve and adapt to environmental changes. Finally, mutations is the tool is a source of many diseases and disorders. Studying the effect of mutations on the particular biological system, helps us to understand this system. Somatic mutations occur in somatic cells the mutant phenotype will be displayed only in the descendants of that cell and will not be transmitted to the progeny.
