Uncertainty about whether treatment of an individual is the result of personal attributions or group membership biases. Feedback may be more helpful to white students than black students. Black students only accept feedback if they know that the evaluator didn"t know their race. Prevalent negative stereotypes about a social group create concern for members of group about confirming the stereotype. Blacks do worse on tests when asked to indicate race first. Women do worse when told that gender differences are being studied. White students do worse on math tests when told the test was over why asians are better at math. Whites did worse on tests of athleticism when told they were being tested on natural ability, but better when they were told they were being tested on intelligence. Change society, change social norms, work on yourself. Support and empower targets of stereotypes and prejudice. Using values- affirmation to boost self- worth involves interviewing subjects.
