Document Summary

Social perception: the processes by which people come to understand one another. Emotions, attitudes, personality traits, forming impressions, predicting future behavior. Examine how people explain and analyze behavior. We consider how people integrate their observations into coherent impressions of others. Discuss some of the subtle ways that our impressions create a distorted picture of reality- often setting in motion a self fulfilling prophecy. We cannot actually see someone"s mental or emotional state or his or hers motives or intentions any more than a detective can see a come that has already been committed. These clues arise from an interplay of three sources: persons, situations, and behavior. We are told has young children not to judge a book by its cover but as adults we cannot help ourselves. Research has shown that people evaluate spontaneously and unconsciously whether a face indicates whether that person is submissive or dominant and trustworthy or untrustworthy.
