JRN185 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Serendipity
Document Summary
Talks about what it takes to be a journalist in his book. The common journalist, the much repressed, all over the world, and outstanding. Randall had a love for journalism and newspapers. Tended to stay optimistic about both unlike others. Intolerant to journalism that fails to meet its high expectations. Insists that there is more good than poor journalism. There are more truthful journalists than truth twisters. Acknowledges that media and newspapers can and should be, and sometimes are, an important force for good. It [a newspaper] can do many other things, such as telling [readers] what it thinks of the latest movies, how to plant potatoes, what kind of day taureans should have, or why the government should resign. But this will be merely a reflection on issues already known without fresh knowledge . The market of newspapers that owns them and dictates their policies. The degree to which society requires newspapers to be regulated or controlled.
