Children choose environments that reflect their genes. Child plays tee-ball: she"s really good at it (genes) She chooses to play softball in middle school: doesn"t do band/drama. She chooses to play softball in high school: plays soccer in off-season too. She plays in college on a scholarship: she chooses a major in sports medicine. Child"s genes evoke certain environmental response: responses in environment further enhance child"s genes. Temperament: child happier/easier temperament if parents are nurturing/responsive. Innate, automatic response to particular forms of stimulation. Examples: moro: baby perceives they"re dropping and spread arms/legs to hold onto something, palmar grasp: place something in baby"s palm automatically hold it. Drop out around 6 months of life: brains have grown for voluntary movement. Inappropriate absence/presence of reflexes = brain damage: absence brain damage, if after 6 months reflect hasn"t dropped, brain not growing appropriately. Infant preferences at birth: native language, food, voice, smell of mother, music (theme songs, stories read to them (dr. seuss)
