Tests for group differences after treatment: purpose: Difference between pre-test and post-test determines whether treatment affected the outcome. Covariation: pre-test and post-test, control groups, experimental groups. Ruling out third variables: random assignment, control groups, experimental groups. Step 1: randomly assign participants to groups. Step 2: test anxiety levels of both groups. Step 3: administer treatment to experimental group. Step 4: test anxiety levels of both groups. If anxiety levels of experimental group decreases more than control group: success. Control group does not always get nothing: wait list control, treatment-as-usual, placebo. Participants may alter their behavior based on their perceived condition. Do not know what you are giving/receiving: intentionally, placebo effect, evaluation apprehension. Example: lying about what you are studying.
