Document Summary

Staining: gram stain, acid fast stain methylene blue (secondary) and carbofulschin (primary) Biochemical tests: metabolism of sugars, metabolic endproducts, composition of bacteria, numerical identification. Serology- the science that studies serum and the immune responses that are evident in serum. Antigen: a foreign substance that is introduced into the body (human or animal) that causes the production of an antibody. Antibody: specific proteins produced by the body in response to the presence of an antigen. Viruses that attack bacteria phages: can have lysis of bacteria. Can have a pattern of infection by a group of phages used to differentiate between species and strains. Dna base composition: % gc content, > 10% difference bacteria probably not related. Dna fingerprinting: restriction enzymes, cut a molecule of dna everywhere a specific base sequence occurs, produce restriction fragments, compare fragments of different microorganisms. Nucleic acid amplification tests: pcr polymerase chain reaction, can be used to find organisms that cannot be cultured.
