Magnitude of the response: molecule or receptor site interacts with the chemical to produce a response, which is related to the concentration of the chemical at the receptor sire, which is related to the initial administered dose. Lethal dose: the lowest dose that causes death in any animal during the period of observation (ld1: can be expressed as the dose as which a % of the population exhibits lethal effects. Most common is ld50 where half of the population. Ld50 is mostly being abandoned due to ethical considerations (is it really ethical to give a dose to a group of animals that you expect half of them to die?) Effective dose: the dose of a drug or therapeutic agent that produces the desired effect in a percentage of the population: also expressed similarly to ld, as edx. Standard safety margin: ssm = ld1/ed99.
