PSY 0310 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Asymmetrical Tonic Neck Reflex, Fixed Action Pattern, Stretch Reflex
Document Summary
Presentation notes: reaching experience increases face preference in 3 mo old infants. Infants engagement shaped by their own exploratory action. Previous studies: 3-6 mo infants show more interest in objects after onset of reaching and self- sitting behaviors. Infants observed reactions reflect their understanding by learning from others. Infants show more sophisticated interactions with their mothers. Distinct facial features and social interactions in relation to other faces. This study: interaction between babies and physical and social world. Tracked eye movement and 4 step reaching assessment (place toys beyond reach, within reach but far, close to hand, and in hand) and see response. Results: training with sticky mittens (active) showed stronger preference for faces. passive training showed no preference, untrained showed more facial preference. Alternative explanation: parent interaction with children during training could have been different between groups. Domains of dvlpt: physical, neural, perception, motor, cognition, social/cultural. Usually researchers study a specific domain, not the whole child.
