Abnormal psych: ch 7: mood disorders and suicide: Mood disorders: severe alterations in mood for extended periods of time. Mania: intense and unrealistic feelings of excitement and euphoria. These two can occur for long periods of time, can alternate, or can occur at the same time switching very rapidly in mixed-episode. Depressive epidosde: extreme sadness for 2+ weeks and other symptoms with sleep and appetite. Manic episode: notable euphoria interrupted by bursts of irritability for at least a week. Plus 3 other symptoms in mental state, behavior, etc to diagnose all around. Hypomanic episode: 4 days long, and symptoms to a lesser degree. Major mood disorders 15-20 times more common than schizophrenia. Depressive and anxiety disorders more likely in women. Bipolar not as common in general, and no difference in prevalance between the sexes. Unipolar depression prevalent in low socioeconomic people b/c more stress and adversity. Also bipolar very prevalent in artists, possibly b/c fuels their art.
