Mood disorders: characterized by unusually severe or prolonged disturbances of mood, depressive disorders, bipolar disorders, depressive disorders are also called unipolar disorder because the mood disturbances goes only in one emotional direction or pole (down) Five or more symptoms present during same 2-week period; represent change in functioning. In last 2 years, 2 episodes have occurred seasonally. Major depressive disorder with peripartum onset: episode(s) have onset during or after pregnancy (peripartum; postpartum is after delivery only, estimated 3-6% of women, with or without psychotic features. In the majority of menstrual cycles, at least 5 symptoms present in week prior to menses, with improvement within a few days of onset & minimal/absent in week postmenses: this is a more severe form of pms. Inflated self-esteem/grandiosity: pressured speech, decreased need for sleep, racing thoughts, distractibility. Increase in goal-directed activity: excessive involvement in activities that have a high potential for painful consequences.
