Document Summary

We"re free when we choose what is good for us. Good and bad are defined by your culture. To build liberal conception, human autonomy must be a moral good. Kymlicka: even if governments know what is good for us, we cannot enjoy governments" decisions without endorsing them/understanding and accepting them. Kymlicka: in order to lead full lives, we must be able to revise what we believe is good . Freedom involves making choices among various options, and our societal culture not only provides these options, but also makes them meaningful to us. People make choices about the social practices around them, based on their beliefs about the value of these practices (beliefs which, i have noted, may be wrong). And to have a belief about the value of a practice is, in the first instance, a matter of understanding the meanings attached to it by our culture.
