The basic principles of liberalism are principles of individual freedom: liberals can only endorse minority rights in so far as they are consistent with respect for the freedom of individuals. Immigrants are now no longer expected to assimilate entirely to the norms of dominant culture and are encouraged to maintain some aspects of their ethic particularity. No(cid:449), e(cid:374)glish has (cid:271)e(cid:272)o(cid:373)e the (cid:862)(cid:373)other to(cid:374)gue(cid:863) a(cid:374)d is spoken mainly at home. Some groups have faced enormous pressures to assimilate. In multination states, national minorities have resisted integration into the common culture and instead sought to protect their separate existence by consolidating their own societal cultures. For a culture to survive and develop in the modern world, it must be a societal culture. Defining feature of liberalism grants people a very wide freedom of choice in terms of how they lead their lives.
