Document Summary

Sensation is conscious as well as subconscious awareness of external or internal stimuli (change in the environment) The response to the sensation depends on the nature and response varies according to destination. Simple reflex like stretch reflex is a spinal reflex. You have the sensation going to the spinal cord, and the spinal cord integrates it (puts together the information) Can have information going to the brainstem, this is usually a complex reflex such as heart rate and breathing. When people go into a coma where there is a problem with the cerebral cortex, they can still breathe and have a heart beat due to the reflex being in the brainstem the primitive brain. Information can go into the thalamus which is a gateway for the cerebral cortex. It tells the cerebral cortex about where the signal and what type of signal is coming in.
