Document Summary

All the systems we have talked about so far, they start functioning right away. We need all of them right away, but the reproductive system is different that it does not come into play until we reach puberty. Its turned on pretty late and it is not necessary for individual survival it is necessary for the propagation of the species. The primary sex organs (gonads) are the ones that are most important for its function. Testes(male) and ovaries (female) are the primary sex organs. They are the ones that produce the gametes. For male it is the sperm and for females it is the oocyte(egg) All the other remaining reproductive system are secondary or accessory reproductive organs: overview of hormones. The sex hormones in males are referred to as androgens and in females it is estrogen and progesterone. We also have other hormones that are involved. They are all steroidal hormones and they are made from cholesterol.
