Document Summary

Cell theory: every living organism is made of one or more cells, the smallest organisms are single cells, and cells are the functional units of multicellular organisms, all cells arise from preexisting cells. Diffusion: high solute concentration to a region of low solute concentration driven by a concentration gradient. Can occur within a fluid or across a barrier such as a membrane. Basic attributes of cells: cell function limits cell size cells need to exchange nutrients and wastes w/ the environment. No part of the cell can be too far away from the external environment. Plasma membrane: composed of a bilayer of phospholipids in which proteins are embedded into 2 layers. Not straight wavy not rigid flexible: regulating the flow of materials into and out of the cell, phospholipid bilayer: isolates the cells contents from the external environment, proteins: allowing communication with the extra cellular environment.
